The sky is groaning
The ground is rumbling
The clouds are tipping over

Yet a few hours ago, I never experienced such silence in my entire being.

I visited a catholic cathedral near my neighborhood today. It is a cathedral who's existence would have never become known had you no prior knowledge of it, as it is hidden in the woods off the interstate.

The church's exterior was ordinary and trite, yet the inside was alive and at peace.

As I entered, it was soundless but not eerie.
The concrete walls were cold, yet the byzantine images of Christ and his saints were tender and inviting.

Squeaky sounds creeped from every turn of my leather bound shoes, burning through the noiseless air, echoing and bouncing from wall to wall as if the sounds waves were a racket ball endlessly springing from one wall to the next.

I found solitude
I found safety


I think I will visit again, not to pray and not to beg for forgiveness, but to sit in silence.
